Fed: NZ s Clark to open memorial on Anzac Day eve
New Zealand Prime Minister HELEN CLARK will open a New Zealand Memorial with Prime
Minister JOHN HOWARD in Canberra next Tuesday.
The memorial, a gift to the people of Australia from the New Zealand government, flanks
both sides of Anzac Parade.
It symbolises the continuing spirit of cooperation between Australia and New Zealand
which dates back to Gallipoli in 1915 and the birth of the Anzac legend.
The memorial is the result of an international design competition conducted by the
National Capital Authority.
An autority spokesman says up to 200 veterans will travel from New Zealand for the
dedication ceremony.
The memorial features two basket handles, reflecting a Maori proverb which literally
translates to mean each of us at a handle of a basket.
